Words on Fabrics, Quilts
and Other Textiles

Part IV

by Patricia L. Cummings

Wow! Art quilters are rallying forth to the call for examples of their quilts with words. I hope you are loving these images as much as I am!

This image is sent to us by Sherry Boram. The letters of "Lady & the Light" were createed by Rubber stamping with acrylic paint. The words say "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor, Your Huddled Masses, Yearning to Breathe Free, I Lift My Lamp Beside the Golden Door."

This is a postcard for Edgar Allen Poe's birthday. The text was printed on paper and fused with Heat 'N Bond Ultra, and stitched around, according to Sherry Boram.

"Home" features fused letters made with Heat 'N Bond Ultra, and stitched around. The words in white are tube painted.

Words can be hopeful and powerful, as seen on this quilt called "Journey" by Sherry Boram.

This quilt, "Thank You" by Sherry Boram has some quotations. "Feel It: Gratitude is the heart's memory." French proverb / "Speak It: Silent gratitude isn't much use to anyone." / Live It: Love is the way I walk in gratitude."

"Masking the Grief" by Sally K. Field

"This is "Masking the Grief" which was made in 1996 for part of a group project. I belonged to a group of five art quilters in Maine--The Renegades. We decided to do a group of quilts that would travel to different venues. We each chose five inspirations from Ecclesiastes 3:1-11. The quilts were not to be biblical quilts--rather the words were the jumping off point. We were not to share with each other until all 25 quilts were done---not even the words that inspired."

"A Time to Mourn" was my first. It is 22" x 27". It is machine appliqued and machine quilted. Written in a jumble across the background are the words that come at you when in mourning..."With Sympathy--So sorry to hear--Thinking of you--In your time of loss." However, quilted in even lines across are...peace--love--health--joy--life... those words that are always there but you have to look for them.

This is one of a series of quilts that Eleanor Levie has created. She states, "ReUse quilts are all collages where the quilt top is made exclusively of foil-lined packaging- mostly that used to hold a single tea bag OR ground coffee."

This quilt was designed by Eleanor Levie

This quilt was submitted to the "New from Old Contest 2010" of the Alliance for American Quilts.

The artist statement that Eleanor wrote to accompany this quilt says:

"Classic patchwork, vintage ransom note-text, rendered in medium generally meant for the trash heap. Am I saving the planet from a path-o-logical hoarding disorder? Or perhaps, just having enormous fun. Especially love those tea bag packets - they really hold a crease! And la di-dah, I'm taking a little vacation from my iron!"

Rhoda Taylor's "Seven Deadly Sins" was accepted into a show set up by the Pittsburg Society of Artists. She used her ink jet printer to print Chinese characters and the corresponding English names of sins, as well as their corresponding penalty in hell.

I remember reading a book in Spanish about The Seven Deadly Sins when I was a university student in the 1970s, but at the moment I cannot find the book, nor can I remember the author.

Looking at the Wikipedia file, the most recent list of sins is: wrath, greed, sloth, pride, lust, envy and gluttony. The file lists 7 virtues: humility, charity, kindness, patience, chastity, temperance and diligence.

The first letter of each word, in Latin, have been combined into one word "SALIGIA" that stands for supebia, avarita, luxuria, invidia, gula, ira, and acedia to represent the 7 deadly sins in their entirety. "SALIGIA" was the title of the show into which Rhoda Taylor entered this quilt.
