Words on Fabrics, Quilts and Other Textiles

Part II

by Patricia L. Cummings

Delores Hamilton created the collage above that measures 120" when the pieces are placed together. Below are some close-up shots of individual blocks (that all measure 13" x 15") some of which have "words" on them.

The sheer fabric "with writing about gardens in French, is my favorite," Delores says.

Delores writes: "Pat, I mentioned the sheer fabric in my note to you. Here's the quilt I used it in, titled "Up the wall and down the garden path."  It's hard to photograph because it's about 120" high. Each of the blocks is approximately 13" x 15", but they connect on common "ground." The detail shots will give you snippets of the sheer fabric."

Delores states: "This quilt has two fabrics in the background that have text on them. The blue and white has "Hello" in multiple languages. The predominantly lime green, black and white fabric has ecological text on it. Although you can't see it in the photo, the globe on the man's shirt has a line from the "Save Our Planet" fabric across the Earth that says 'Tree hugger'."

"The welcoming committee" 48" x 48". This was a sample of a much larger quilt I intended to make for a local Unitarian Church (the woman's scarf is what the choir members wear). Because the church supports a lot of the issues around global warming, I chose the right background panel for that. Because it welcomes everyone, I chose the "Hello" fabric in multiple languages. Because the church has an extensive music program, I chose the panel on the left, which has a few words in Italian on it. (The members didn't like the sample).

The skeleton is dancing next to a sign in this quilt by Debbie Bates: "Stop dancing / And Risk / forgetting how."

Debbie said, "The images relate to a page dedicated to including words on quilts in our book that just came out (In signature). In my classes, I regularly call the act of freely thread painting (free-motion writing) words "Free scripting"

Her new book is titled, Threads: The Basics and Beyond.

Linda Boone Laird's Quilts

"If the only prayer you ever said was Thank You that would be Enough" is one of three quilt pictures that Linda Boone Laird sent that have words.

A garden related quilt by Linda Boone Laird

The words on this quilt by Linda Boone Laird say: "Why let people you despise / live rent free in your head?" and "Remember, forgiving isn't forgetting / It's letting go of the hurt." I love the messages of this quilts and the artists use of "pillar print" (columns) fabric.

Linda states, "I use several different methods: applique, computer printing, embroidery; and in my latest work (not pictured), I drew and then machine outlined the words."

Bunnie Jordan sent a photo of a quilt that she calls "Techies."

This quilt celebrates the young and the old and was made as a challenge quilt. Some of the words that appear on this quilt are "You have mail," "google," "scroll," "contacts," "spam," "twitter," "tweet," "app." Well, you get the picture! This could sound like goobledygook to an older person!

Bunnie tells us that some of the words are quilted, some are appliquéd, and others are printed. "You.com" is quilted!

"Relics" by A. Carole Grant

A. Carole Grant sent a photo of a piece of fabric she had written on and which she is cutting up to use in various projects. she also sent the image of a quilt seen above. The background is hand written using Pigma Pens, in her own penmanship... on rusted cloth.

She is in the process of changing blog servers and her 'newly-minted' blog is a work of art, in progress. Visit http://www.acarolegrant.wordpress.com
