A Book Review by Patricia Cummings

An immediate conclusion to which one can jump, when first seeing Lynn Lancaster Gorges book, Walk & Roll, is that the collection of sewing projects, contained therein, are both useful and practical, and are the brainchild of a very thoughtful and caring person. The 86 page book features color photos of wheel chair cover-ups, totes to add to walkers, armrests for wheelchairs, and more. Clear sewing instructions and diagrams are presented for making these helpful aids. The intent of many of the projects is to provide mobility-impaired individuals easy-access to necessary items.

"The Patestown Bag"
The author has named some of her projects for favorite North Carolina towns
Kitchen Linens Utilized for Projects
Pretty and colorful store-bought kitchen linens such as napkins, placemats, and kitchen towels are used by the author in creating these projects. Her mother, Eva Pate Lancaster, was the inspiration for the book. She suffered a severe stroke in 1991, which left her confined to a wheelchair and unable to converse. Trying to find ways to sweeten her mother's life, Gorges began sewing brightly-colored textiles, and the idea escalated from there!

"The License Plate Bag"
As you see, this type of helpful pocket bag can be personalized for both sexes.
Designer Sets Forth Clear Expectations
With the purchase of Walk & Roll, the buyer may make an unlimited number of these projects for personal use or gift giving. If you plan to make more than 12 items for sale, a commercial license must be obtained from the designer. This notice is a nice addition.
The Author Shares Her Creativity
The projects would make great Holiday or birthday gifts, or a gift on any day, just as a reminder of your affection. The author states on the book's Dedication page: "I feel strongly that God led me to fulfill this project so that others could reach out as caregivers."
If you are a caregiver at home, or if you work in a nursing home, this book is a must-have. Wouldn't it be wonderful if Walk & Roll started a whole new trend in nursing homes? Color and design could transform an otherwise sterile and dull environment into a home-y, caring one. Quilter's Muse gives a two-thumbs up for Lynn's book!
