Victorian Angels in Redwork

"Angels Sing Thee To Thy Rest"

Victorian angels in redwork

After finding a vintage example of this design in a Maine antiques shop, I decided to reproduce the motif found on the ragged, old linen that looked old enough to have been used on a coffin. I wanted to investigate the motifs significance. The Victorians loved angels! My research about this motif is currently published on this website in a book titled, Redwork History book, Redwork Embroidery and Needlework Traditions in Europe and America, previously a printed book, but now available, free of charge.

This same Redwork design has been seen in eBay sales but the faces of the angels look ugly or almost demonic. One of the sightings was this design rendered completely in Black, for a more chilling feeling to it. Enjoy learning about the design's relationship to both William Shakespeare and to a famous painter! Enjoy!
