Thanksgiving

a poem by Pedro Oliveros, Lima Peru

This poem was sent to me on September 8, 2007, just a short time after the devastating earthquakes hit Peru. Pedro Oliveros does missionary work and is a native of Peru.

Thanksgiving

Lord,

Thanks for the paper

And the ink

Which scan the black holes

Of human hearts.

And for the sound of the watch

Which paces the rhythm

Of the universe's pain.

Thanks for the sick eyes

That still look at the play

Of the long black dress Lady.

Thanks for the brain

The old guard in the highest tower

Who never closes his eyes.

Thanks for the tired feet

That tutors the insane paths

Of our shadowy souls.

Thanks for the pale hands

Eternal weavers of broken dreams.
