A song from 1862, written to encourage Northern troops, during the Civil War.
In the book titled "My Story of the War," Mary A. Livermore mentions how one soldier started signing this song and was soon joined by thousands of other voices. Besides rallying 'round the national flags, both Confederate and Union regiments carried their own regimental flags. The flag bearer was a brave soul, indeed, and never armed. Of course, the soldiers on the "other side" would target the flag of the opposing army for target practice, or alternatively, they would attempt to capture the flag to keep as a trophy of war. Many of the flags were lovingly stitched by women on the home front.
