A video prepared by PBS describes and shows the twenty two cemeteries that exist worldwide where fallen American soldiers are honored. "Hallowed Ground" is a sixty minute documentary that recalls the service of many, individually and collectively. Many of the final resting places feature sculptures and large painted murals. All monuments are carefully groomed, with not a blade of grass out of place. They honor our heroes, the men who never came home, and provide a physical place for survivors to visit, to pay their respects and to be humbled by the enormity of loss as witnessed by the headstones, "row on row."
While gravestone markers are important, after the Civil War and certainly after World War I and World War II, small towns began erecting monuments to its heroes.

This monument was erected in Manchester, NH to honor the first soldier from the city killed during World War I. Private Henry John Sweeney died in Soisson, France on February 18, 1918. photo by James Cummings
