Friend at My Side

by Bob Rotruck, CWO3, USN (RET)

The following poem was written while recalling an experience at a Prayer Ministry Team retreat near Pike's Peak, Colorado. The author felt inspired by God to write this poem.

Friend at My Side

©Bob Rotruck, 2006

I walked at sunrise between the trees of the gravel road,
Slightly down the hill my feet slowly strode.
A slight bend in the road opened up the trees,
To a view of God's creation, I almost fell to my knees.

The man beside me grabbed my slumping frame,
I gasped in awe at the sight of what looked like a giant flame.
The sun was striking Pike's Peak in beautiful splendor and grace,
The man next to me said my Father made this beautiful place.

In my weakened state I said, "Thanks for your support."
He said, "I am always here like a ship finding a safe port.
You can count on me to always be at your side,
No matter how difficult, I will never run and hide."

"I'm just glad you came out this day to see my Father's work,
And take awhile to view this site while the world goes beserk.
To know that just one on earth lives in my Father's hand,
I will be with you always throughout this beautiful land."

I stood there, my eyes brimming with joyful tears,
I turned and he was gone, but I knew I had no fears.
For the spirit of God's Son lingered there with me,
I had no reason to worry or have a need to flee.
Thank you, Jesus, my friend on this morning walk,
You have made my day by your presence and our blessed talk.
