On the far right, standing, is my friend, Gigi Piñero from Puerto Rico. She taught me most of the Spanish songs that I know, including this one. The other women in the photo were fellow students at the University of Navarra, Pamplona, Spain, (1972-1973), with whom I shared lunch at their invitation in their Colegio Mayor, (home for women students). There we enjoyed get togethers called tertulias, at which time we shared stories and played guitar music. In the photo above, we had all taken a bus trip to Roncesvalles.
Cuando Salí de Cuba
Nunca podré morirme, mi corazón no lo tengo aquí.
Alguien me está esperando,
me está aguardando que vuelva allí.
ESTRIBILLO
Cuando salí de Cuba, dejé mi vida, dejé mi amor.
Cuando salí de Cuba, dejé enterrado mi corazón.
Late, sigue latiendo, porque mi tierra vida le da
pero llegará el día en que a su lado se encontrará.

Translation by Patricia Cummings
When I Left Cuba
I will never be able to die, my heart is not here.
Someone is waiting for me, someone is watching
for my return there.
When I left Cuba, I left my life, I left my love,
When I left Cuba, I left my heart buried.
Beat, keep beating, my heart,
because my land gives life.
But the day will arrive when, at your side,
I will be found.
