The history of Native Americans in New Hampshire is a fascinating subject and one worth exploring. The Millyard Museum in Manchester, New Hampshire has quite a bit of information. I look forward to reading more about this topic. Many of the Abenaki moved to Canada and interbred with the French population there. However, many Abenaki returned to places they had loved, such as North Conway, New Hampshire. Today, there are less than 1,000 people of Abenaki descent in the state, and few who speak their native language. Here is a link to .

Have a great day!

    Dear Douglas,

Thanks for your remarks. I’d never considered that the Abenaki ancestors might have come from Greenland or Iceland. There is so much to celebrate when it comes to ethnic diversity.

I wonder if the Kearsarge Indian Museum in Warner, NH has any information about the Abenakis.

Aben is a kind of distortion, coming from Waubun or Waban meaning “white” and aki means ground/ land/ earth. So in essence, the word Abenaki literally means People of the White Earth. What this tells us as Native People’s here in N’dakinna (The land in which we come from) that long long time in the ancestral past, our ancestors came from the north, very likely the Northern Greenland land/ice crossing. Not all of the Native People’s came across the Bering Straits up in Alaska. Anyway, hope this helps a little further. As a dear friend Joseph Elie Joubert has shared with us all so kindly, through the language is related our heritage, our cultural awareness, at least giving us a look into how the Abenaki ancestors related to their environment, and to each other in their lives. Of course, they didn’t have vehicles, televisions, and refridgerators like we do today.
