cd cover for Ellen Webster e book

Ellen Emeline Hardy Webster was her name.

The name of the CD e-book is Ellen Emeline Hardy Webster (1867-1950): Her Amazing Quilt "Charts," Her Writings, and Her Life.

Rose of Sharon block

This is an example of one quilt chart made by Ellen Webster who drew the design and then pasted on red and green fabrics. This quilt pattern was called "Rose of Sharon," one of many 19th century blocks by the same name. As a religious person, this block would have held special appeal for Mrs. Webster.

Ellen Webster's own design.

Ellen Webster was a quilter herself who learned to quilt at her mother's knee. She went on to become a very educated and influential woman of her day, in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. One of her missions (and passions) in life was to save old quilt designs that she had seen on antique quilts in her day (1930s) and collected these designs at that time. There are 162 charts with one or more design. Some of the charts are double-sided.

Ocean Wave

"Ocean Wave" is a geometric design that is pieced with triangles, and very graphic looking. This is another design the Ellen Webster saved!

This is presumed to be Ellen's wedding photo. She is wearing her mother's brooch.

Ellen Webster was a woman with a mind of her own who contributed much to the communities in which she lived and worked. As a teacher and later an instructor at Wheaton College, she loved to give lectures to provide information about quilt history, Bible studies, and birds, for which she had a keen interest. She served as a leader in so many ways, including actions that resulted in a conference of Bryologist from all over the world who convened in Groton, NH to see the "luminous moss" about which she had been so inquisitive, that grew under an old barn.

Our 355 page CD e-book on pdf explores every facet of Ellen Emeline Hardy Webster life, insofar as it can be ascertained. This is a study in woman's history, the changing times in which she lived, life in two different New Hampshire towns, the influence of other quilt historians of the day on Ellen's work, and photos of her (sometimes famous) family members.
