North Carolina Lily Quilt Block

This image is a Sample Block of one that I reproduced from a quilt that was made circa 1850.  Read a charming story about this block and an antique top of this same pattern.

North Carolina Lily block

Traditional quilts continue to be a timeless inspiration for quilters of the 21st century. This sample quilt block was inspired by a quilt made by someone’s “auntie” in Ohio.

North Carolina Lily quilts were made with Turkey Red fabrics, one of the earliest kinds of cloth to be colorfast and lightfast.

There are a number of variations of this pattern and its colors of red and green on a white background are a classic combination that was quite popular, especially among “flower” appliqué quilts of the nineteenth century.
